The Vermont state archaeologist says she’s sure a set of old bones discovered in the Northeast Kingdom will be returned to Colorado where they came from.
The bones are believed to be of victims of an 1854 Indian raid in what is now Pueblo, Colorado.
Ralph Swett of Brownington found the bones in a box that he purchased when working as an auctioneer. It’s not known how the bones got to a house in Ryegate.
Swett had the bones on display over the summer at a small American Indian museum he runs in Brownington, although he says he’s sure they aren’t American Indian bones.
Vermont State Archaeologist Giovanna Peebles says officials are working with Swett to send the bones back to Colorado.
