(Neal Charnoff) Vermont author Tom Paine first won notice for a book of short stories, and is now celebrating the release of his first novel, “The Pearl of Kuwait.” The book is a comic adventure that takes place during the first Gulf War.

The book’s narrator is a California surfing dude, who teams up with a fellow gung-ho marine, and together they go AWOL behind enemy lines to rescue a Kuwaiti princess, and maybe take the American flag all the way to Baghdad.
