Vermont State Police say a child has drowned at a popular swimming hole in Bolton.

Maj. Bill Sheets said this afternoon that a dive team was working to recover a drowning victim at the Bolton potholes on the Joiner Brook.

Police were called to the scene at 1:07 p.m. After a two-hour search, police said the rescue effort turned into a recovery mission.

Lt. Marc Thomas said it’s unclear how the child drowned. He told the Burlington Free Press that the child’s parents were not at the swimming hole, but other adults were.

Last week, two men were rescued from the Huntington Gorge in Richmond after they could not get out of the rapid water.

A 19-year-old man drowned at the Bolton potholes in 2004.
