BP Amoco to reduce tobacco sales to minors

BP Amoco, one of the country’s largest oil companies, will adopt policies that will reduce the purchase of tobacco by minors, according to Vermont attorney general William Sorrell. Sorrell says Vermont was one of 39 states that worked with Amoco to change the policy at its stores and gas stations.

Now, BP will tell clerks to check the ID for customers who appear to be under 35, use video systems to monitor compliance, and program the cash registers differently. While Vermont has no BP stores or franchise stations, the agreement will apply to any new stores that might be built.
