Bridge in NH Pemigewasset Wilderness being removed

Hikers interested in taking on New Hampshire’s Pemigewasset Wilderness Area are advised to do some planning on their route, now that a 180-foot suspension bridge is coming down.

Forest officials are starting to dismantle the bridge Monday, saying the nearly 50-year-old foot bridge is no longer safe for hikers.

The bridge is about 5.5 miles from the Kancamagus Highway.

Forest officials say a wilderness trail on the east and south side of the Pemigewasset River will stay open and will incorporate a new, short section of trail that bypasses the bridge site.

All points within the Pemigewasset Wilderness Area are still accessible without crossing the east branch of the river at the bridge site.
