Officials in the town of Burke have banned commercial development until the end of the year.

The select board says the moratorium will give the town time to complete its town plan and zoning bylaws.

The ban was proposed after the Ginn Company purchased the Burke Mountain ski area and nearby property.

It prohibits large subdivisions and commercial and industrial development.

Officials say the moratorium is intended to restrict ripple-effect development that might occur in town because of the Burke Mountain purchase.

The Burke Planning Commission is writing the town plan and rewriting the zoning bylaws. Both will go before voters once they are complete.
