Burlington Approves Smart Grid Measure

Voters in Burlington are in favor of a $13.5 million bond that will allow the city’s electric department to upgrade the system and implement a smart-grid.

A smart-grid would include meters in homes and businesses to detect and report power use in real time. Burlington Electric customers would be sent a signal advising them on when to cut back on power usage to improve energy efficiency. Officials also say the system will allow the utility to do a better job managing outages.

Half the system’s price tag will be paid for by the federal government.

The Burlington Free Press reports that voters also favored a measure to allow Burlington Electric to purchase power from Hydro-Quebec.
