The Burlington City Council is going to consider banning smoking on the downtown Church Street Marketplace.

The proposal to ban smoking on the pedestrian mall is called "Family Friendly Smoking Restrictions.”

The full council will receive the proposal without the endorsement of the Public Safety Committee.

The Marketplace Commission is opposed to the proposal.

Police say the measure would be hard to enforce and would require fines of from $100 to $200 to be financially viable.

Councilor Ed Adrian proposed the measure. He is suggesting that the smoking ban only be in place from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
