Burlington council rejects marketplace smoking ban

Smokers will continue to be able to light up on Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace.

On Monday, the City Council defeated a proposal to ban smoking on the pedestrian mall.

The vote was 8-5, with all five Democrats on the council voting in favor of the ban. Progressives and Republicans voted against it.

Smoking ban proponent Ed Adrian called his proposal a “family friendly” restriction.

But Councilor Paul Decelles says smokers have rights too.
