Plans to link Burlington and Essex Junction with a commuter rail line are getting a big boost. Senators Patrick Leahy and James Jeffords announced today they have secured $4.8 million for the project. The money will be used for engineering, to buy land and for construction of the eight-mile service.

Leahy says a commuter rail line will take drivers off the busy Vermont Route 15 corridor. Jeffords says the service will connect two key branches of Vermont’s rail system. The senators say the trains could start running in 2006.
