Officials in Burlington say it was state rules that delayed their efforts to release the results of Tuesday’s voting until early Wednesday morning.

There was also a failure of vote tabulating software that kept the city’s vote results from the public until 1:30 a.m., more than six hours after the polls closed.

Ward 1 Clerk Sue Alenick says that in previous elections she sent results straight from optical scanners to City Hall. The new rules required that all absentee ballots and write-in votes be counted before that could happen, significantly delaying the process.

City Chief Administrative office Jonathan Leopold has said he hopes the Legislature will change the law to make it easier to count votes.
