A 35-year-old Burlington man has changed his plea and admitted kidnapping, raping and killing 31-year-old Laura Winterbottom in Burlington more than two years ago.

Gerald Montgomery agreed to serve 43 years to life in prison.

But Winterbottom’s parents said no punishment will relieve their anguish. They described their daughter in court and said they are tormented by her death at the hands of a man they called a monster.

Montgomery apologized at today’s hearing, saying if he could, he would exchange his life for Winterbottom’s.

Judge William Kupersmith told Montgomery that the crime he committed was the most horrendous he could think of.

The judge said he hopes Montgomery is never released from jail.
