The Burlington school board is abandoning a proposal to consolidate the city’s elementary schools as a way to reduce the high poverty rates among students at two schools.
The board voted yesterday to keep all six schools open, but members are supporting a proposal to study the creation of magnet schools to attract middle and upper income students to the downtown schools.
The emotional discussion of the socio-economic integration of students in Burlington has been before school officials for months.
Some feel the two Old North End schools have a greater share of economically challenged students, which could hinder their educations.
