(Host) Burlington police say they will take "a wait and see approach" to a weekend encampment that a group of Occupy Wall Street protesters are planning in City Hall Park, where camping is banned.

City officials ruled Friday the protesters can stay in the park after its midnight closing as long as no public health and safety concerns arise from the gathering and other rules are followed.

The city says officials will evaluate the event as it takes place. Authorities say they reserve the right to enforce any laws.

Under city ordinances, people are forbidden from sleeping in parks after 10:00 p.m., or setting up tents and bedding for that purpose.

About 120 people are expected at the encampment.

Organizer Jonathan Leavitt says people hope to bring attention to the economic inequalities in the U.S.

(Leavitt) "Vermonters are really hurting in this economic crisis, and we’re being left out in the discussion of how our economy is being run."

(Host) More protests are also taking place this weekend in Montpelier, Brattleboro and Rutland.
