Burton Shutting Down Vermont Manufacturing Facility

Burton Snowboards says it’s closing down its manufacturing facility, where 43 people work.

The Vermont snowboard maker will move manufacturing from South Burlington to Austria this summer. But it will keep its global headquarters and product design operations in Burlington.

The company’s founder, Jake Burton Carpenter, says it costs significantly more to make snowboards in Vermont. He says that is "not sustainable in the current economy."

So production will be consolidated in a Burton factory in Austria that has been making snowboards for more than 25 years.

Burton says it’s working with the Vermont Department of Labor to provide resources to the 43 employees affected by the closure.
