A Stowe man who spent 36 years with the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources and rose to become deputy secretary has died.

Canute Dalmasse, died Tuesday at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was 63.

Natural Resources Secretary George Crombie says Dalmasse was a Renaissance Man who was great with his family, he was involved in the community, and he had a tremendous love for the environment.

Dalmasse started with the agency in 1971 when Vermont was beginning to spearhead the protection of the state’s natural landscape and waterways.

Last year, Dalmasse said that in a couple of decades the lakes and rivers of Vermont went from open sewers to fishable, swimmable waters.
