Catholic Diocese sees increase in sexual assault claims

Vermont’s Catholic Church faces more clergy sexual assault claims now than it did a year ago.

That’s even though the statewide Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington has paid out more than $1 million during that period.
Since paying $965,000 dollars to Michael Gay of South Burlington to settle one major case in April a year ago, twelve new lawsuits have been filed against the diocese.

Lawyers involved in the cases say it’s unlikely that any of the more than two dozen cases now pending will go trial soon.
They say there numerous legal steps that have to be completed before a trial could begin.
