A Catholic elementary school in Springfield that has been in operation for seven years will be closing at the end of the school year.

A shortage of students and money prompted Vermont Bishop Salvatore Matano to close the Holy Family School at the end of the year.

Principal Eileen Kendall says there were many tears when the move was announced yesterday.

The diocese says Saint Mary’s Parish, which sponsors Holy Family, is expected to be $277,000 in debt by the end of the year.

The board had agreed to let the school stay open if 80 students were registered for next year by March 1. But only 50 students were registered.
