Cemetery removal plan at center of dispute

A small cemetery is causing big problems for a man trying to buy an old farm in Hartland.

Michel Guite agreed to buy the 130-acre property in December, provided he could move a cemetery that includes the grave of a War of 1812 veteran. Guite wants to move only the three graves registered with the town, but historians say there are more than three, and that a Hanover, New Hampshire man also buried his parents’ cremated remains there before selling the farm in the 1980s.

Guite’s plan to move the cemetery has unleashed an outcry, with the town passing a resolution to help stop the move. A descendent of one cemetery occupant is trying to fight him in probate court and concerned people, including veterans, asking the town to take over the cemetery.
