Changes proposed for child support penalties

Vermont lawmakers are considering three bills that would change parts of the state’s family law. Among the changes are higher penalties for failing to pay child support, and new authority for Family Court judges to impose joint custody on divorcing parents, even if one parent objects. Current law requires the consent of both parents. The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear testimony on the proposed changes this week.
