Circ Highway Plan Stalls

(Host) Governor Peter Shumlin announced that the long-planned Chittenden County Circumferential Highway around Burlington won’t be built.

A senior administration official says federal money for the project is drying up, and that the road — first designed 30 years ago — no longer meets modern transportation planning and environmental standards.

The Circ Highway has long been opposed by environmental groups who say it will merely generate more traffic congestion and pollution in Vermont’s most populous county.

A group called the Vermont Smart Growth Collaborative has been pushing improvements to existing roads instead.
