Civil union opponents see defeat of same-sex marriage push

Two prominent opponents of Vermont’s civil unions law say they’re confident they can defeat any push toward full marriage for same-sex couples.

Stephen Cable of the group Vermont Renewal says he doesn’t see much difference between civil unions and marriage.

And he says he doesn’t think a new commission set up by legislative leaders to discuss the issue will help change people’s minds.

Cable and the Reverend Craig Bensen of Take It ToThe People say they doubt House Speaker Gaye Symington would be able to muster the votes to pass a gay marriage bill.

And they say they expect Governor Jim Douglas would veto such a measure.
