The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a Lake Champlain Ferry mishap in which a ferry hit pilings near the dock on the Vermont shore in Grand Isle.

Officials say such an investigation is routine in any maritime accident.

Coast Guard officials say the investigation will include a thorough examination of the incident. The investigation is expected to take several weeks.

The Lake Champlain Transportation ferry Cumberland was approaching the Grand Isle ferry dock on its regular run from New York shortly before 6 p.m. on Jan. 30 when the captain noticed the vessel was not slowing as it should. So the captain steered the ferry into pilings, rather than the dock.

A crew member and two passengers received minor injuries.
