Coffin nominated as next US attorney

A Burlington attorney is poised to become Vermont’s next top federal prosecutor.

Senator Patrick Leahy says he’s nominated Burlington attorney Tristram  Coffin to become Vermont’s next United States Attorney.

If confirmed, the 45-year-old Coffin, will become Vermont’s 36th U.S. Attorney. The office oversees federal prosecutor operations at offices in Burlington and Rutland.

Between 1991 and 1994 Coffin worked as counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which Leahy is a member. From 1994 to 2006 he worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in Vermont. He is now in private practice.

The appointment will be made by President Barack Obama.
