Applications to Vermont’s state colleges are up sharply this year. The increases range from eight percent at Johnson State to 25% at Lyndon State and the Randolph campus of Vermont Technical College. College officials say the state schools are less expensive than many other colleges, a key advantage in the current economic climate. They also say a slack economy prompts higher than normal numbers of people to go back to school to seek a new degree.
