Commission recommends hospital spending cuts

A state panel that reviews health care costs has recommended spending cuts for two Vermont hospitals. The Public Oversight Commission on Wednesday said the state should approve spending proposals for 12 Vermont hospitals.

But the commission says that the state’s largest hospital, Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, should reduce its rate hike request. The hospital wants to raise rates by 3.5%. The commission’s recommended cuts would lower that increase to 2.5%. The commission also recommended cuts for the Northwest Medical Center in St. Albans.

The recommendations now go to the state Commissioner of Banking, Insurance and Health Care for final approval.
