The CEO of a company that owns an oil pipeline across northern New England says the firm has no plans to ship Canadian tar sands oil on the line, but would welcome the opportunity to do so.

Portland-Montreal Pipe Line CEO Larry Wilson told Vermont lawmakers Tuesday that he believes the company could safely and reliably handle reversing the flow of the pipeline – it currently carries oil from Portland to Montreal – to carry heavy oil from western Canada to the Maine coast.

Wilson says his company opposes legislation pending in Vermont that would subject any such change in use of the pipeline to Vermont environmental regulations.

Environmental groups have been raising an alarm about the pipeline, saying it would make Vermont and its neighbors conduits for the world’s dirtiest oil.
