A new legislative committee hopes to help direct improvements in the efficiency of Vermont state government.

The Joint Legislative Government Accountability Committee met for the first time yesterday, electing Representative Donna Sweaney as chairwoman and Senator Diane Snelling as vice chairwoman.

Panel members took testimony on a recent round of job cuts in state government.

The Douglas administration has been trying to reduce the government payroll by 400 positions through attrition.
