Vermont lawmakers are planning to outline today their plans for legislation that would create a new sex crimes law that would carry a mandatory 25-year minimum prison sentence.

The details of the crime of aggravated sexual assault on a victim under age 16 will be announced during a Statehouse news conference.

The proposal comes in the wake of the June slaying of 12-year-old Brooke Bennett.

Her uncle, convicted sex offender Michael Jacques, is charged with killing her.

The state Senate Judiciary has held hearings aimed at determining how the state Corrections Department and the court system handled Jacques’ prior cases.
