A New Hampshire hydropower operator is gauging interest in reviving a hydroelectric dam that once supplied power to a long-defunct tanning mill.

Peter Howe of Silver Street Hydro met with the select board this week to discuss the idea he first suggested in July 2007.

The select board likes the idea, but says there are many hurdles that need to be over come.

Select board chairman Nelson Brownell says the main obstacle is the silt collected by the dam is contaminated with PCBs.

The town would like to have the dam declared a brownfields site, which could make it eligible for cleanup grants.

Howe says he’s examined the dam and thinks much of it could still be used.
