Officials across northern New England are applauding the proposed lawsuit settlement against one of the nation’s largest power generators.
Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell calls it a major victory for the environment in the northeastern part of the U.S.
The settlement will prompt the largest reduction ever in emissions that cause acid rain.
American Electric Power of Ohio agreed to end a years-long lawsuit by paying 4-point-6 billion dollars to reduce pollution from 16 power plants that has fouled the air and eaten away at Northeast mountain ranges and national landmarks.
A judge still has to approve it.
Vermont was one of the parties to the lawsuit.
