Turkey hunting is one of the only sports where actually communicating with the prey is a key to the hunter’s success.

A skilled turkey hunter uses calls made from wood, slate and plastic to imitate the sounds of the hen in order to draw the unsuspecting tom turkey within range.

A good owl call comes in handy, too.

Last weekend in Barre, contestants from around the region clucked, purred, cackled and hooted as they competed in the Vermont State Turkey calling championships.
