A former copper mine in Corinth may added to the national Superfund list of the worst polluted sites in the country. The Environmental Protection Agency’s recommendation would make it eligible for federal cleanup assistance.
Senator James Jeffords says he’s pleased the mine has been targeted for cleanup. But he’s critical of the Bush administration for under-funding the Superfund program.
Pike Hill is the third mine in Vermont’s Upper Connecticut River Valley to be included on the Superfund list. It has 20,000 tons of so-called tailings. The tailings include metals and sulfides that turn to sulfuric acid after rainwater flows over them and into local streams and rivers.
