A federal judge has ruled in favor of school officials in Williamstown who ordered a student to cover up images of drugs and alcohol on a T-shirt. U.S. District Judge William Sessions ruled this week that a middle school student’s First Amendment right to free speech was not violated when the principal ordered him to cover up drug and alcohol images. The school did not object to the political message of the shirt that was critical of President Bush.

The court says there’s a distinction between images and words, which are protected by the First Amendment. The court also said that any disciplinary action against the student should be expunged from his school record.
