Vermont State Police say a trooper acted quickly when his cruiser caught fire on Interstate 91, in Bradford Thursday.

The vehicle was having mechanical problems when Trooper Joshua Lewis pulled onto the shoulder of the road and the engine caught fire.

Trooper Lewis got out the cruiser and tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher but it spread quickly. The car was a total loss.

Firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire.

Meanwhile, Vermont State Police say Trooper Lewis was able to retrieve several expensive items from the trunk before the fire took hold, as well as secure the scene and direct drivers away from the hazard.

The interstate was closed for about 40 minutes. And no one was injured.
