Gardeners who saw their crops destroyed by contaminated compost may be eligible for a refund and compensation.

The Chittenden Solid Waste District’s board of directors has voted to approve a compost customer assistance program to help gardeners affected by trace amounts of herbicides found in compost products sold by the waste district.

The herbicides were detected in bagged and bulk compost sold as "Green Mountain Compost," after gardeners reported destroyed crops.

The program is subject to final legal review. But the waste district says gardeners should file a report online at Green Mountain Compost.com, if they haven’t done so already.

Details of the program will be announced soon but will likely include a take-back program for any unused product, as well as refunds. And impacted gardeners may be eligible for financial assistance to cover loss of seeds, plants, materials and labor.
