Vermont’s largest electric utility says it will need to raise rates starting next April. On Thursday, Central Vermont Public Service Corporation filed for permission to raise rates by five percent.

The utility notes that it has only had one rate increase in the past five years. The company notes that in the same period, the consumer price index has risen 10 percent and the price index for energy has risen 28 percent.

CVPS agreed a year ago to freeze its rates through this year.
