Dartmouth Student’s Claims Put Hazing In Spotlight

Things have only gotten messier at Dartmouth College in the weeks since a former fraternity brother went public with hazing allegations.

Senior Andrew Lohse brought the issue to the forefront in January, with a school newspaper column describing the "dehumanizing" experiences he witnessed at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Those experiences allegedly included pledges being forced to swim in and consume vomit. The college has now brought hazing charges against the fraternity and more than a quarter of its members, including Lohse.

Fraternity president Brendan Mahoney says all 27 students face identical charges, but none of the fraternity’s current members were members in 2009 when Lohse was a pledge.

Dean of College Charlotte Johnson says the college is acting on specific information and isn’t on a witch hunt.
