The Department of Veterans Affairs is near agreement on a plan to move its outpatient clinic for veterans from the Vermont Veterans Home to its own facility.

Spokesman Kenneth Thibodeaux said the department has been searching for a larger space for several years and that they are finalizing a contract with a new site.

He would not name the site, but said it is larger and it is located within the city limits. The VA wants to increase the space for services.

For two years, the Department of Veterans Affairs has sought a new facility for the clinic, which leases about 2,000 square feet of space from the Vermont Veterans Home on North Street. Officials say at least 5,000 square feet is needed to accommodate the growing clinic.

Vermont has about 63,000 veterans, more than 4,700 of them in Bennington County.
