Dean says patients can impact health costs

Campaigning in Concord, New Hampshire Thursday, Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean says Americans need to take more responsibility for their health care.

Dean told a health care forum he’d require people covered by his proposed health insurance plan to sign living wills that describe what kind of medical they want, in case they become too ill to communicate with doctors.

Dean says drug companies, insurers, lawyers and others help drive up the cost of medical care, but so do people who don’t take care of themselves or make realistic decisions about medical treatment.
