Diary farmers urged to sign up for federal price support system

As milk prices start to fall, Vermont agriculture officials are urging dairy farmers to sign up for an extended federal price support system.

The deadline is May 17th. Farmers can enroll at local USDA Farm Service Agency Offices.

Dairy farmers are bracing for what many expect will be a steep drop in the price paid for the milk they produce.

The federal price support system that has helped farmers endure low prices has expired and the replacement isn’t as generous as the old one.

In addition to low prices, farmers have been dealing with high costs for fuel and fertilizer. The situation is made worse by an increase in the milk supply.
