Vermont’s seven-year-old DNA database was crucial to helping police find the man they believe killed a Burlington woman.

Thirty-three-year-old Gerald Montgomery of Burlington pleaded innocent on Tuesday to charges of first degree murder and aggravated sexual assault in the March 9 death of Laura Winterbottom. He is being held without bail.

Police say they made the arrest late Monday evening after the state registry of DNA samples from convicted sex offenders turned up a match between Montgomery and evidence found at the crime scene.
