Governor Jim Douglas says he’s against same sex marriage.

Douglas says Vermont’s civil unions law is good the way it is, and he says the state doesn’t need a "divisive" debate on the topic.

Vermont was the first state in the nation to adopt civil unions, in 2000. Legislative leaders say they’re poised to pass a bill that would legalize same-sex marriages this year.

In an editorial board meeting at the Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus on Tuesday, the Republican governor wouldn’t say what he’ll do if the bill is approved and sent to him for action. He says he won’t be pleased if that happens before the Legislature acts on an economic development bill.
