Doyle proposes new term limits for state offices

The current and former speaker of the Vermont House say they’d agree to four-year terms for statewide officers – but only if legislators get the same deal. The Senate Government Operations Committee is soliciting input from Speaker Walter Freed and former Speaker Michael Obuchowski about a proposed constitutional amendment.

Senator Bill Doyle wants to change the Constitution to double the terms of the governor and other statewide officers. Any plan that emerges must win approval in the Senate by a two-thirds majority and then a simple majority in the House.
