East Montpelier and Legislature address use of groundwater

Residents in East Montpelier will be asked at Town Meeting to approve a ban on the withdrawal of large amounts of groundwater.

The moratorium is in response to a proposal for a water bottling plant in town.

And East Montpelier residents aren’t the only ones concerned about the protection of underwater aquifers.

The Legislature is considering a bill that would spell out who owns the state’s groundwater.

Supporters of the ban in East Montpelier hope that if it’s approved it would protect the community’s groundwater until the legislation is passed.

Tom Brazier is project manager for the Montpelier Spring Water Company proposal. He says he doesn’t think the moratorium will be binding since state laws already exist to protect groundwater use.
