Voters in Eden and Lowell have overwhelmingly rejected the idea of adding a closed asbestos mine to the national list of Superfund hazardous waste sites. A Superfund designation would have put the property in line for federal cleanup money.
The old Vermont Asbestos Group mine sits atop Belvidere Mountain and straddles the boarder between Eden and Lowell. A Superfund designation requires state support, and Governor Peter Shumlin said he would only endorse the listing if residents in both towns approved the idea at Town Meeting.
The vote in Eden was three to 106 against the superfund designation. In Lowell, the vote was 103 against and 38 in favor.
