A Vermont committee has been appointed to conduct a national search for an education secretary after a state law was passed that gives the governor the authority to make that appointment.

Stephan Morse is chairman of the Vermont State Board of Education. He says he and three other board members have been appointed to the panel.

They’ll recommend three candidates to the full board who will then make a recommendation to the governor.

Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca plans to apply for the post.

Vermont lawmakers passed legislation that elevates the state’s chief education official from a commissioner to a Cabinet-level secretary.

In the past, the education commissioner has been appointed by the state board of education.

The change takes effect on January 1st, 2013.
