Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca was elevated today to education secretary.

A new law that expands the Education Department to a full government agency went into effect this week.

As an agency, education now gets a secretary who will also be a member of the governor’s cabinet along with the secretaries of transportation, human services and others.

Vilaseca has been commissioner since 2009 and has spent 30 years in education.

His promotion comes after a national search and was announced by Governor Peter Shumlin. The governor says the appointment will be for the next year.
