The criminal case against a one-time financial adviser accused of stealing from clients has been dismissed because of his death.

Deputy Bennington County State’s Attorney Christina Rainville says it’s hard to prosecute a dead person.

Rainville says embezzlement and grand larceny charges against 55-year-old Mark Stevenson, of Bennington, have been dropped since his Sept. 26 death.

Stevenson, who operated a business called Wealth Management International, was charged after a man told police he suspected Stevenson had stolen from his deceased father.

Bennington Police Detective Sgt. David Rowland says at least three more victims have been identified.
