Emergency drill planned around Vermont Yankee

Towns around the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant are gearing up for an emergency drill tomorrow.

Vermont Emergency Management will be joining personnel from Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, Halifax, Vernon and other state agencies in the drill.

It’s designed to test the ability of first-responders and others to handle an emergency at the Vernon reactor.

The drill will be reviewed by FEMA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which will gauge the region’s readiness.

The drill will be a full scale exercise and include plume teams, and the possible sounding of tone alert radios. Officials note that the exercise is only a drill and the public should not be alarmed.
